Bearcats News · Long Time Teacher/Coach Gabe Sanchez Set to Retire in June

The Bonita Athletic Department wishes to salute long-time teacher and Golf Coach Gabe Sanchez as he starts a well-deserved retirement this June.

Coach Sanchez is a graduate of The Webb Schools in Claremont. At Webb Coach Sanchez was a four-year member of the golf team.  Coach Sanchez later graduated from the University of La Verne where he was a member of the golf team for two years.

Coach Sanchez began his teaching career as an elementary school instructor in the Ontario-Montclair School District. After 2 years Coach Sanchez became a teacher at Damien High School.  One year later he joined the staff at Bonita High School. He started out teaching Freshman Studies and World History.  Gabe moved on to teach Advanced Placement courses in Human Geography, Economics, and Psychology.  Mr. Sanchez also helped the College Board in the development of the AP Economics program and has graded exams for many years.  Mr. Sanchez has been awarded the Bonita Teacher of the Year.

At the time of his arrival, the Bonita golf program had fallen on hard times.  Coach Sanchez and his long-time Assistant, Mike Regan, took on the challenge of rebuilding the program. Coach Sanchez built the foundation for a program that developed into one of the most successful at Bonita High School.  The golf team under Sanchez earned a birth in the CIF Playoffs in 18 out of 19 years.  Gabe and his players won League Championships in 1999, 2000, 2004, 2005, and 2010.  Coach Sanchez had 19 winning seasons and never finished in less than 3rd place.  Many of Coach Sanchez’s players went on to play golf in college and some have made careers in the golf industry. Gabe’s youngest son Dillon played on the golf team for 4 years. Coach Sanchez was called back to The Webb Schools to start their Girls Golf Program.  He invested 4 years in establishing this program for his Alma Mater.  In 2016 Coach Sanchez was recognized by the CIF for a Champion of Character Award (see picture above), and a banner honoring him hangs permanently in the Ketterling Court Gym. After 19 years as the Bonita Golf Coach, Coach Sanchez proudly turned over the reigns to one 0f his ex-students and current Bonita teacher – Mitchell Pike.

The Athletic Department honors Coach Sanchez for his successful 21 years of service to the students at Bonita High School. His record of success as a teacher, coach, husband, father and friend has been an inspiration to all of us who have had the privilege to work with him.
