Boys Golf

golf team 2016

For the past seventeen years, the Bonita Golf Team has competed in the Valle Vista League, winning two league titles in 1999 & 2000, and in the Miramonte League winning back to back titles in 2004 & 2005 and winning it again in 2010 in the Hacienda League. We are currently in a new league, the Palomares League, and have competed as a team in CIF for the past sixteen years, and have sent individuals to the CIF Individual Regional competition a total of eleven out of the last sixteen years. Former players are currently playing or have played at Citrus College, and ULV, where our former player finished 16th in Division III Nationals. One of our players, who from the PGA program at New Mexico State University, has been working in pro shops at resort courses throughout the country. We have a former player who graduated from the San Diego Golf Academy and then became the Assistant Pro at LA Country Club and at Red Hill Country Club and a second player who is currently attending the same academy. One of our former players received a full scholarship to play Division I at Fresno State University where he finished in his senior year and graduated. Another former player has gone to school to become a golf course superintendent and is currently working as a course superintendent in the Monterey Bay area.

As each year has passed, the team has become more competitive and harder to make. One of the key areas is not only playing ability, but academic standards. The coaching staff has taken pride that we have fine players and some of the top academic students in the school. Last year, five out of our six players were Academic All-League. This is very important, because we miss school, especially 7th period. It is important for new players to make sure they have 7th period P.E. A player has a difficult time doing well in their 7th period class, if they are missing it 2-3 days a week.

The golf season starts in early February with pre-qualifying Q School. This is designed for players that have not tried out for the team before. After this, there is Q School which lasts 2 weeks. This is where players play 6-8 rounds and the team is determined. It is recommended that players practice before Q School. Q School is where coaches can see what you have.

The Golf Team is not instructional based for the beginning golfer. If you want to learn the game, take lessons over the summer, and practice. This year we are carrying 2 teams, with a total of fourteen players. Many of the top players work on their game year round. Players must provide their own equipment.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact Coach Sanchez, regardless of the nature of your need. Coach can make recommendations on lessons and equipment and have contacts in the golf industry.
